SSTESOL / Arnhilda Badia Outstanding Student Award

Purpose: To honor an outstanding high school student who has achieved academic excellence while learning English as a second language.

Who’s Eligible: High school seniors enrolled in a public school in the state of Florida. Must be accepted to an accredited college or university for the coming fall academic semester.

Award:$500.00 USD (1 award)

Guidelines & Criteria:
  • As part of the application, the student will write an essay of 300-400 words that describes the applicant’s academic experiences (including ESOL), highlighting personal and academic challenges and achievements, and future educational goals, and how this award will be used to pursue those goals.
  • Recommendation Letter: One letter of recommendation from a current or former teacher, providing information relevant to the factors above, will be attached to the application form. Letter must be signed and scanned.
  • Follow-up:
    • The awardee agrees to maintain contact with the SSTESOL President/Board of Directors for up to one year. If feasible and schedule permitting, awardee will attend the SSTESOL Awards Ceremony the year following receipt of the award to update the organization on his or her academic pursuits.

Purpose: To honor an outstanding adult (18+ years of age) ESOL student who achieved academic excellence while learning English as a second language.

Eligibility: Adult education students enrolled in an ESOL, EAP, IEP, or Language Institute (LI) programs in the state of Florida

Award: 1 award at $500.00 US.

Applications open:  April 1, 2022

Deadline:  September 1, 2022

Purpose: To honor an outstanding adult (18+ years of age) ESOL student who achieved academic excellence while learning English as a second language.

Eligibilty: Adult education students enrolled in an ESOL, EAP, IEP, or Language Institute (LI) programs in the state of Florida

Award:$500.00 USD (1 award)

Guidelines & Criteria:
  • Applicant will write a minimum one-page letter of request, which describes the applicant’s academic experiences (including ESOL, EAP, IEP, or LI), highlighting personal and academic challenges and achievement.
  • Additional information should be included that outlines the applicant’s future educational goal(s), and how this award will be used to pursue that goal.
  • Recommendation Letter: One letter of recommendation from a current or former teacher will be submitted, providing information relevant to the factors above.
  • Follow-up: Awardees agree to maintain contact with the SSTESOL President/Board of Directors for up to one year. If feasible and schedule permitting, awardees will attend the Awards ceremony during the annual SSTESOL conference to update the organization on their academic pursuits.
