SSTESOL Mini-Grant Awards

Purpose: To provide financial support for teachers, paraprofessionals, parent liaison and/or graduate students currently involved in TESOL, TEFL, Bilingual Education, Applied Linguistics or a related field.

Who’s Eligible: Any of the above pre-service or in-service professionals
  • who have not been awarded a SSTESOL travel grant in the past two years, and
  • who will not be receiving support from their own institution to attend the 2018 Sunshine State TESOL Conference.


Award: $400 (10 awards will be given this year)

Guidelines & Criteria: You must be a member of Sunshine State TESOL. (If you are not a current member, sign up on our membership page)

Only complete applications submitted by Feb. 15th will be considered. Complete applications consist of the application form and required essay that can be found by clicking APPLY above.
  • Recipients must participate in the entire conference.
  • Recipients must provide a post-conference write-up of about 200-300 words regarding their conference experience. This document must be provided no later than two weeks post-conference and should include summaries of sessions attended, new ideas learned from the conference, and/or personal reflections on the SSTESOL conference experience.

Outstanding Educator Award Nominations:  Designed to honor TESOL/Bilingual Education professionals considered outstanding by their colleagues.

Deadline:  February 15th, 2020

SSTESOL Outstanding Educator Award

Purpose: To honor active TESOL/Bilingual Education professionals considered outstanding by their colleagues.

Who’s Eligible: Professional educators, administrators, or support staff with at least 5 years of experience in the field of ESOL in Florida. The nominee must be a member of Sunshine State TESOL. (If you are not a current member, you can get your membership here.)

Award: $500.00 USD each to (1) K-12 & (1) higher education professional

Nomination Process: A one page letter of nomination must be submitted which includes a description of the accomplishments of the nominee and highlights of the achievements of the nominee. The letter of nomination should exemplify the qualities of the ESOL professional who will be recognized for excellence.

Additional information should be included to provide evidence of the criteria listed below:
  • Ability to motivate and inspire students as well as other professionals in the field;
  • A talent for engaging others in learning;
  • Exceptional professional service outside the classroom;
  • Involvement with professional colleagues/organizations, and
  • Continuing professional development.

Recommendation Letter: One additional letter of recommendation (one page maximum) will be submitted, providing information relevant to the factors above.

Supporting documentation: The nominee will send a vita or resume and a written statement (500 words max) focusing on:
  • Reasons for becoming an ESOL professional;
  • Professional philosophy;
  • Plans for further education and other creative endeavors, or activities that will enhance your role in the field of language education.

Research Grants: Designed to support graduate studies in the field of TESOL and/or Bilingual Education or related fields.

SSTESOL Research Grants:

Purpose: To support graduate studies in the field of TESOL, Bilingual Education, or related fields.

Who’s Eligible: All current Sunshine State TESOL members who are enrolled in a TESOL, TEFL, Linguistics, or related graduate program at an accredited institution in the state of FL and who are currently completing a master’s or doctoral thesis or a substantial research paper relevant to the fields of ESL, EFL, Applied linguistics, or a related field.

Award: One award of $500.

Guidelines & Criteria: Applications are evaluated in terms of
  • Reasons for pursuing graduate studies in the field,
  • Stage of program completion, and
  • Financial need.
Preference is given to students who are within one year of program completion.
Submit the following:A two-page (maximum) letter of application including:
  • An explanation of your reasons for pursuing graduate studies in ESL/EFL/applied linguistics or a related field;
  • Expected completion date; and
  • A statement from your academic supervisor/advisor/dissertation chair/faculty member confirming that you will complete your program within one year; and
  • A current curriculum vitae, and
  • A 50-word bio-data summary.

Badia Scholarship Award: Designed to honor outstanding high school students who achieved academic excellence while learning English as a second language.

Arnhilda Badia Outstanding Student Award

Purpose: To honor outstanding high school students who achieved academic excellence while learning English as a second language.

Who’s Eligible: High school seniors enrolled in a public school in the state of Florida. Must be accepted to an accredited college or university for the coming fall academic semester.

Award:1 award at $500.00 USD

Guidelines & Criteria:
  • Applicant will write a (min) one-page letter of request, which describes the applicant’s academic experiences (including ESOL), highlighting personal and academic challenges and achievements.
  • Additional information should be included that outlines the applicant’s future educational goal(s), and how this award will be used to pursue that goal.
  • Recommendation Letter: One letter of recommendation from a current or former teacher will be submitted, providing information relevant to the factors above.
  • Follow-up:
  • Awardees agree to maintain contact with the SSTESOL President/Board of Directors for up to one year. If feasible and schedule permitting, awardees will attend the 2018 SSTESOL Awards Ceremony to update the organization on their academic pursuits.

Institutional Excellence Award: Designed to recognize outstanding contributions of K-12 schools and Higher Education institutions.

Institutional Excellence Award



Purpose: To recognize outstanding contributions in the support of English Language learners.

Who’s Eligible: Florida K-12 schools, higher educational institutions, community organizations, and non-profits.

Award: $500.00 and a recognition certificate

Guidelines & Criteria:

  • 1) Submit a one-page narrative that provides evidence for each of the following criteria:
  • The institution’s mission related to the education of English Language Learners
  • Ways in which the institution empowers its members
  • Ways in which the institution engages in professional development and student learning
  • Ways in which the institution contributes to community initiatives for English Language learners
  • 2) Include a letter of recommendation from a stakeholder outside the institution. Applicant will write a (min) one-page letter of request, which describes the applicant’s academic experiences (including ESOL), highlighting personal and academic challenges and achievements.
  • Additional information should be included that outlines the applicant’s future educational goal(s), and how this award will be used to pursue that goal.
