SSTESOL Travel Grants

Purpose: To provide financial support for teachers, paraprofessionals, parent liaison and/or graduate students currently involved in TESOL, TEFL, Bilingual Education, Applied Linguistics or a related field.

Who’s Eligible: Any of the above pre-service or in-service professionals
  • who have not been awarded a SSTESOL travel grant in the past two years, and
  • who will not be receiving support from their own institution to attend the 2019 Southeast Regional TESOL Conference.


Award: $400 (10 awards will be awarded from SSTESOL).

Guidelines & Criteria:
  • Only complete applications submitted by July 1, 2019 (11:59 PM EDT) will be considered. Complete applications consist of the application form and required essay (please find details by clicking APPLY)
  • Grant recipients must participate in the entire conference.
  • Grant recipients must provide a post-conference write-up of about 300 words regarding their conference experience. This document must be provided provided via email to awardschair@sstesol.org by no later than two weeks post-conference and should include summaries of sessions attended, new ideas learned from the conference, and/or personal reflections on the SE REGIONAL TESOL conference experience. PHOTOS ENCOURAGED AS WELL!

Badia Scholarship Award: Designed to honor an outstanding high school student who has achieved academic excellence while learning English as a second language.

Arnhilda Badia Outstanding Student Award

Purpose: To honor an outstanding high school student(s) who has achieved academic excellence while learning English as a second language.

Who’s Eligible: High school seniors enrolled in a public school in the state of Florida. Must be accepted to an accredited college or university for the coming fall academic semester.

Award: 1 award for $500.00 USD

Guidelines & Criteria:
  • Applicant will write a (min.) one-page letter of request, which describes the applicant’s academic experiences (including ESOL), highlighting personal and academic challenges and achievements.
  • Additional information should be included that outlines the applicant’s future educational goal(s), and how this award will be used to pursue that goal.
  • Recommendation Letter: One letter of recommendation from a current or former teacher will be submitted, providing information relevant to the factors above.

Follow-up: Awardees agree to maintain contact with the SSTESOL President/Board of Directors for up to one year. If feasible and schedule permitting, awardees will attend the 2018 SSTESOL Awards Ceremony to update the organization on their academic pursuits.
